Two Indira Canteens were inaugurated in town by District In-charge Minister Ramanath Rai and Minister for Food and Civil Supplies U T Khader on Tuesday.

The Indira Canteens are situated opposite Lady Goschen Hospital and near MUDA office at Urwa Store.

Mayor Kavitha Sanil had said on Monday that four Indira Canteens will be inaugurated. However, due to absence of Mangaluru North MLA Mohiuddin Bava, the canteens at Surathkal and Kavoor were not inaugurated. The work on the Indira Canteen at Pumpwell too was delayed due to confusion over the location.

The KRIDL has constructed the Canteens at a cost of Rs 2.97 crore. The Canteens will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner for 500 persons daily. People will have to collect coupons for dinner. Only Rs 25 would be charged for each person, at Rs 5 for breakfast and Rs 10 each for lunch and dinner. The remaining expenditure will be borne by the government.

Master kitchen

The work on the master kitchen of the Indira Canteen at Urwa Store will be completed by Saturday. This will not affect the supply of food for the people as the contractor will prepare food elsewhere to supply to the canteens, said officer Prasanna. On the inaugural day, tiffin was served for 500 persons, he said.

MLA J R Lobo, who laid the foundation for development works initiated by Mangaluru City Corporation, worth Rs 112.09 crore, said that laying foundation stones for development works is not a political gimmick. "The Congress-led government has been initiating development works since the beginning. Development is not possible without communal harmony in the city," he added.
