A class 12th student was allegedly gang-raped by four unidentified people in a moving car in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly district on Wednesday.

The perpetrators dumped the victim on the side of the road in Fatehganj area of the district, the police said.

The victim was admitted to the hospital, where her condition was stated to be critical, the police added.

According to the sources, the victim, a student at a local intermediate college was abducted on the Budayun highway near the town on Wednesday morning while she was on her way to college.

According to the eyewitnesses four people, who were in a car, bundled the girl in the vehicle and sped away from the spot.

The victim was found lying on the side of the road in Fatehganj West area, a few kilometres away from the Bareilly town, a few hours later.

Police said that a case has been registered and efforts were on to trace the perpetrators. ''We are trying to identify the culprits....we have some leads,'' said a police official in Bareilly.

Sources said that some youths had tried to molest the victim on the same spot while she was on way to her college a few days back.

Successive incidents of rape in the state in past few days has caused widespread concern despite the ongoing crackdown by the government on the criminals. The opposition parties have attacked the BJP government for its alleged failure to ensure the safety of women.
