Last Updated 07 May 2010, 15:52 IST

In a depressed market, except for oil & gas index, all the sectoral indices were in the red. The market breadth was weak, while realty, banking, metal, pharma, capital goods and telecom stocks fell.

Volatility was high during the day as shares of RIL witnessed sharp swings in the morning when Supreme Court was delivering the verdict on the gas dispute between the two Ambani brothers. The market slipped again in early afternoon trade with the Sensex hitting a fresh intraday low, then it pared losses in afternoon trade and weakened again later.

The BSE Sensex fell 218 points or 1.29 per cent to close at 16,769 points. The broader based S&P CNX Nifty at NSE was down 73 points or 1.43 per cent to settle at 5018 points at the closing this day. The BSE Mid-Cap index fell 2.54 per cent and the BSE Small-Cap index fell 3.01 per cent.  In effect, both the broader indices underperformed the Sensex.
