Gangolli police had registered a case of dowry harassment against a medical representative S M Althaf, his relatives S Nazeer Ahmed, Sugra, children Yasmin and Afrin. It was stated in the complaint that the accused were harassing Najamunnisa, who is the wife of Althaf. It was alleged that the family of Althaf had asked Najamunnisa to prepare a tea after keeping the gas stove’s valve open. Following this, she had sustained burn injuries when she tried to light the gas stove.

Gangolli Sub Inspector Ravi Naik had prepared a chargesheet against the accused. However, the court has acquitted all the accused due to lack of sufficient evidence. Althaf had married Najamunnisa on September 15, 2002. He had allegedly taken Rs 1.5 lakh and 25 sovereign gold ornaments as dowry from Najamunnisa’s parents. Ravikiran Murudeshwar argued for the accused.
