The incident happened at the Pooppallikkavu at 10:50 am. German nationals Katrin Susanne, 45 and her husband Manfred Herbert, 56 were proceeding to a hospital in Cherthala to consult a skin specialist. Shani, 21, an MBA student in Bangalore and who was on training at the Marari resort also accompanied the couple.
The car was hurled about 50 metres under the impact of the collision. The driver, Thankappan, 34, died on the spot while the others died on the way to hospital. Southern Railway has begun an inquiry into the incident. Minister of State for Railways E Ahmed who visited the accident site said that steps had been taken to take the bodies of the German couple home.
