'Knotty' rope troubles CM

Last Updated 15 August 2010, 19:42 IST

The spectators at the Parade Grounds stood to attention, as the master of ceremonies signalled that the Chief Minister Yeddyurappa will be unfurling the Tricolour. Inspite of repeated attempts by the Chief Minister to unfurl the flag by tugging at the end of the flag rope, the flag did not open.

Even as attempts to unfold the flag continued, an Army helicopter on its customary flypast, showered down rose petals.  Finally the flag was lowered, faulty knot removed and hoisted again.

Later, in his speech, the Chief Minister asserted that Belgaum was an integral part of Karnataka and it will not allow Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi (MES) to create confusion and disturbances.

“I assure the people of Karnataka that our government will protect our land, water, border, Kannada language and the culture of the State without making any compromise”, Yeddyurappa said.

He said Mahajan Report had confirmed the state’s view that Belgaum is an integral part of Karnataka. Besides, the same had been reaffirmed in the Supreme Court by the Central Government by submitting an affidavit recently, he said.

He said the government had resolved to conduct the legislature session at Suvarna Vidhana Soudha in Belgaum during December this year.
