"Today was a tough day for both of us because the wind kept changing direction. It was a difficult match which could have gone either way," Safina told reporters.

The unseeded Tamarine, who also beat the Russian in last year's final, next faces Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium. Wickmayer advanced with a 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 win over Italian Francesca Schiavone.

Bartoli doubt

Virginie Razzano set up a clash with Caroline Wozniacki in the final of the Eastbourne International tennis tournament after Marion Bartoli retired hurt.

Bartoli's withdrawal after 11 games put fellow Frenchwoman Razzano in the final against Dane Wozniacki, who beat Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second semifinal. Bartoli, a Wimbledon finalist two years ago, limped out with a thigh injury on Friday and said her participation at Wimbledon could be in doubt. In the men’s event, former world number three Ivan Ljubicic limped out after injuring his ankle in a heavy fall. The tall Croatian winced in agony as he was helped off court by a trainer, and his Wimbledon prospects are doubtful.
