'Excise dept should check methanol usage'

SHRC recommends to State government

Speaking to presspersons after receiving grievances from the public on Saturday, he said the use of methanol leads to tragedies in the illicit liquor cases. The power to check illicit liquor is in the hands of excise department while methanol control is in the hands of Drug Controller. There are severe shortage of staff in Drug Control department. In this background, the Commission has recommended the government to hand over the power to check the usage of methanol to the excise departmet 10 to 12 days ago. At present, there is a district-level officer in every excise department, he added.

20,000 cases

The Commission came into existence three years ago and has received 20,000 cases. Of which, half of the cases have been disposed. Of the 20,000 cases, about 4,424 cases have been registered by the Commission on suo motu basis after reading news on the violation of human rights in the newspapers.

Of which 30 to 35 per cent cases were related to police department. The Commission has recommended the government to constitute a permanent Commission to solve the problems of agriculture sector. Parthasarathi said that the Commission will discuss with the Chief Secretary, DGP and Law secretary on the need for setting up of district-level unit of Human Rights Commission on Monday.

Public are becoming conscious on human rights violations. The Commission is receiving 60 to 70 cases everyday. Many do not like to air their grievances in the DC’s office or government offices. Hence, a unit of the commission should be set up in the district, he added.
