According to sources, the two leaving the station is in contravention of the Karnataka Municipal Corporation (KMC) Act of 1976.

The Section 61 of the Act reads “When the office of the Mayor is vacant, his functions shall devolve on the Deputy Mayor...”. Further, if the Mayor has vacated his seat continuously for more than eight days, his powers will devolve on the Deputy Mayor till the time he recovers from his incapacity.

A DSS delegation was left in the lurch with no one to accept its memorandum on Monday. Finally, BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah received the memorandum on behalf of the Palike.

Senior officials in the BBMP state that while there is no restriction on Mayor and Deputy Mayor moving out of the City, there needs to be someone to address the issues that are urgent. “If both are absent and out of the City, a senior corporator could be asked to take over the reigns for that duration,” informed a BBMP source.
