Following the unprecedented shoreline erosion in the Hudhud-hit Visakhapatnam, the Andhra Pradesh government has constituted an expert panel to study the phenomena and suggest ways of mitigating it.

In the last few weeks, the unusually high tides have eroded most of the embankment of the famous Ramakrishna (RK) Beach, forcing the civic authorities to close a part of the road and also the beach.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has asked the committee to come up with immediate steps and long-term solutions to mitigate coastal erosion.  He appointed Visakhapatnam Port Trust chairman Krishna Babu as Coordinator of the committee, which also has National Institute of Ocean Technology, National Institute of Oceanography, APSRAC, Andhra University, IIT Madras and various ports as its members.

He added that DELFT University in Netherlands is carrying out a study on coastal erosion. “We could bring in experts from the University and work with them to combat beach erosion,” he added.
