A CRPF Inspector General, whose “discreet” inquiry into an encounter in Assam triggered a controversy, has been transferred from his posting in the northeast.

Rajnish Rai, a 1992-batch IPS officer of the Gujarat cadre, had submitted a report  to the CRPF claiming that two persons, who were claimed to be NDFB rebels, were killed in a fake encounter in Simlaguri area of Chirang district on March 30.

The operation was carried out by a joint team of the Assam Police, army, CRPF and its jungle warfare unit CoBRA and the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

Rai has now been asked to join the Counter Insurgency and Anti Terrorism (CIAT) School of the CRPF at Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh.
