100% salary hike for Karnataka Chief Minister, all legislators: State Assembly passes bills

A 'considerable increase in the cost of living' was cited to justify the hike in salaries and allowance of parliamentary functionaries and legislators.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Assembly on Friday passed Bills giving a 100 per cent salary hike to the chief minister and all lawmakers, which will cost the exchequer Rs 62 crore every year.

The monthly salary of the CM will rise from Rs 75,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh.

All ministers will get a 108 per cent salary hike -- from Rs 60,000 to Rs 1.25 lakh.

MLAs and MLCs will see their monthly salary go up from Rs 40,000 to Rs 80,000. Their pension will be hiked from Rs 50,000 to Rs 75,000.

The Karnataka Ministers Salaries and Allowances (Amendment) Bill and the Karnataka Legislature Salaries, Pensions and Allowances (Amendment) Bill were passed in the Assembly without any debate, amid protests by the Opposition BJP whose members were in the well of the House.

“There is a considerable increase in the cost of living. The salary and allowances to the CM, ministers, ministers of state and deputy ministers have not been revised since a long time,” the Bill stated.

Monthly salary of the Assembly Speaker and Legislative Council chairperson will be revised from Rs 75,000 to Rs 1.25 lakh.
