291 anganwadi centres do not have own building

As many as 291 anganwadi centres do not have own buildings in Chikkamagaluru district and lack basic facilities. The district has 1,825 anganwadi centres.

A total of 117 anganwadi centres in Kadur taluk do not have own building and function from rented houses. Such buildings lack huge rooms, verandah and other basic facilities.

As many as 1,138 anganwadi centres do not have electricity connections while 535 do not have water connections. Further, 292 anganwadi centres do not have toilet facilities and 320 do not have a separate kitchen.

Though 291 centres do not have own building, sites have been provided for the construction of 175 anganwadi centres.

Speaking to DH, an anganwadi supervisor said, "In urban areas, it is difficult to get a building with all basic facilities for a rent of Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 per month. The building owners demand advance. We have been managing within the budget of the department."

An anganwadi worker said, "Anganwadis should have a verandah, a huge room, store room, water and electricity connections. We have to adjust in this rejected building. An anganwadi centre at Kaldoddi Layout does not have a water connection."

Rajiv Gandhi Layout resident Kamalamma said, "Anganwadi is situated in a rented building. The children are taken care of from 10 am to 3.30 pm. A total of 30 children attend the centre where nutritious food is supplied to them."
