Bandh: holiday declared for schools and colleges

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil and Udupi DC Priyanka Mary Francis have declared a holiday for schools, PU and degree colleges in the respective districts on Monday in the wake of the nationwide bandh call given by the Congress party.

A press release said that holiday is declared as a precautionary measure keeping in mind law and order.

The DK Bus Operators Association and Canara Bus Operators Association have decided not to operate buses in DK and Udupi districts.

The World Suicide Prevention Day programme organised by the Health department too has been postponed.

The district-level Pratibha Karanji and Kalotsava competitions organised by the Department of Public Instruction in Dakshina Kannada district on September 10 for high school category has been postponed to September 11.

A press release from DDPI Y Shivaramaiah said that the competitions for primary school children scheduled for September 11 will be held on September 12.

Support for bandh

Members of various organisations have expressed their solidarity with the bandh call given by the Congress and various other organisations, protesting the fuel price hike.

The Communist Party of India (CPI) DK and Udupi committees have extended their support to the nationwide bandh. The CPI said that the prices of petroleum products are an all-time high. The government has not taken any measures to check the price rise.

Meanwhile, seeking support for the bandh, the Congress leaders in Mangaluru visited fish and meat markets and vegetable markets on Sunday.

Condemning the BJP-led Union government’s misgovernance and its failure in containing the fuel prices, the Social Democratic Party of India has expressed its full support to the bandh, said a release from SDPI Karnataka state President Elyas Muhammad.

Elaborate security

City Police Commissioner T R Suresh said that elaborate security arrangements have been made to ensure no untoward incidents occur during the bandh. As a precautionary measure, the police have kept a tight vigil on the anti-social elements.

As many as four KSRP and 10 CAR platoons, 1 DCP, 4 ACPs, 25 police inspectors, 30 police sub-inspectors, 1,000 civic police personnel and 150 home guards will be deployed for maintaining law and order.
