The state government has chosen social worker Sindhutai Sapkal of Maharashtra for Basava National Award for 2016. Sixty-nine-year-old Sindhutai Sapkal, called as “Mother of Orphans”, is known for her work in raising orphaned children.
Percussionist T H Vinayakram, a ghatam artiste, has been selected for T Chowdiah National Award. The awards, instituted by the state government, carries a citation and purse of Rs 10 lakh each. Other awards announced by the state government on Friday are as follows:

Usha Datar; Prof K G Kundanagar Gadinadu Award: Hasan Surakoda; Attimabbe Award: Santhi Nayak; Janapada Shree: Lalitha Patrota; Kumaravyasa Award: N R Jnanamurthy; Jakanachari Award: Y Yamkappa; Venkatappa Award: Mahaveer Rachappa Balakayi; Sangolli Rayanna Award: Channanna Walikar.
These awards carry a citation and purse of Rs three lakh each. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will present the awards at a ceremony to be held on May 3 at Ravindra Kalakshetra at 7 pm.
