‘Varshaya Varshaya Varshaya!’, a Karnatik music concert on the importance of water, will be held at Bangalore International Centre, Domlur, on Wednesday.
.
It will be performed by Sumitra Nitin, a prominent Karnatik vocalist and Bharatnatyam dancer. The concert will feature 12 compositions (a few in their entirety), and is “an elaborate version of an hour-long rendition” performed by the artist in 2016 at the Kaikondrahalli Kere Habba in Bengaluru.
.
Some of the compositions that will be showcased are ‘jambupate’ (a composition by Muddusvami Dikshithar in praise of lord Shiva), ‘tulasi jagajjanani’ (a composition by Tyagaraja that venerates Tulasi Mata) and a ‘vachana’ (by Basavanna that mentions how waves add beauty to the ocean and the white water lily adds beauty to the water). “Replete with the wisdom of saints and instances like a boat ride on the Yamuna, the pieces will celebrate water as a teacher and as a divine entity,” says Sumitra.
.
She will use ‘manodharma’ (spontaneous, improvised music) to highlight certain vital lines of the compositions. “Visuals in the form of photographs and videos will accompany the singing to enhance the audience’s understanding and experience,” she adds. A violinist and a mridangam artiste are part of the musical ensemble.
.
The compositions might be familiar to classical music lovers but will be presented with a fresh context, Sumitra says. “When we listen to Karnatik music we focus more on the rendition, but when attention is brought on the ‘sahitya’ (intended meaning of the composition), it will be appreciated differently,” says Sumitra.
.
Varshaya Varshaya Varshaya!
