<p>Davangere: A police constable attached to District Armed Reserve Police Force (DAR), Ramappa Poojary, (33), died on Tuesday after being hit by a lorry while checking vehicles near the toll booth on National Highway 48 at Hebbalu in the taluk.</p><p>A speeding lorry, in an attempt to escape, hit the constable who was on duty. He was checking the vehicles heading towards Chitradurga from Davangere. </p><p>Ramappa Poojary, who was seriously injured in the incident, was immediately rushed to the SS Hi-tech Hospital. However, he succumbed to injuries in the hospital. The rural police have registered a case.</p><p>Hailing from Bagalkot district, Ramappa Poojary joined the police department in 2016. Recently, he was assigned to highway traffic discipline duty. Vehicles that violated traffic discipline on the highway were stopped and fined. The constable was responsible for checking driving licenses and seat belts.</p><p>"While checking vehicles near the toll plaza, a lorry came. Constable Ramappa instructed the driver to stop the vehicle. However, the driver, who pretended to stop, tried to flee with the lorry and ran over the constable. The driver fled,’ said police sources.</p>
