A flood alert has been issued in Cauvery basin areas due to possible filling up of the KRS and Hemavathy reservoirs owing to copious rainfall.

The alert came after the Central Water Commission informed the state government that the KRS and Hemavathy reservoirs may get filled up by July 15, and advised necessary precautions to avoid downstream flooding.

=“KRS and Hemavathy likely to fill in a day or two due to copious rainfall in Cauvery catchment areas. Deputy commissioners have been alerted and strict vigil is maintained in downstream area,” the Revenue department tweeted Friday evening. Mysuru, Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Hassan districts come under the Cauvery basin.

As on Friday, the water level at KRS was 120.20 feet with an inflow of 39,737 cusecs. On this day last year, the water level was 78 feet.

Road damage

Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister
Krishna Byre Gowda announced in the Legislative Assembly on Friday that his
department had released Rs 122 crore to districts where roads have suffered severe damage due to heavy rainfall, especially in coastal and Malnad regions.

“Funds available with deputy commissioners are insufficient. Task forces under legislators will oversee road repair work,” he said.
