IPS officer Madhukar Shetty no more

Senior IPS officer K Madhukar Shetty passed away in Hyderabad on Friday. He was undergoing treatment at Continental Hospital for the last three days.

He was Deputy Director of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (NPA), Hyderabad. Shetty is survived by wife Suvarna C, a daughter and two brothers.

DG&IGP Neelmani N Raju told DH that Shetty was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday. “Initially it was a case of suspected H1N1, but test results are not known yet. He was admitted with high blood pressure and breathlessness. He was put on ventilator. Later, a team of doctors operated on him. He was slightly better by around 3 pm. But, he passed away at around 9 pm,’’ she said.

The last rites would be conducted at Madhukar’s hometown in Vaddarse near Kundapura in Udupi district.

Born on December 17, 1971, Madhukar did his MA in Sociology from JNU, Delhi. He joined IPS in 1999. He worked as ASP Bengaluru Rural district and later as SP of Chamarajanagar and Chikkamagaluru. He also worked in Task Force against Veerappan and as SP of Anti Naxal Force.

Shetty worked as DCP traffic (East) for a brief period and was posted as SP Lokayukta, Bengaluru City. It was during his stint as SP that Lokayukta police arrested Y Sampangi, then MLA, for bribery. He supervised the investigation into the KIADB compensation scam. He booked former minister Katta Subramanya Naidu and his son Katta Jagadish.

“Wherever he went, he made a difference,’’ an official said. Shetty’s father Vaddarse Raghuram Shetty was a journalist with Prajavani.

Shetty went on sabbatical for five years and did his PhD in Public Administration from Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy, University at Albany in New York.

His mortal remains will be kept at Yelahanka Armed Police Training School from 11 am to 2 pm on Saturday to allow officers of Karnataka police pay last respects. It will then be taken to his hometown by around 5 pm.
