Ramsingh, a native of Rajasthan was running Mahalakshmi Jewellery and Pawn Brokers on Mahaveer Road for the past 20 years. As soon as the news spread like a wildfire, anxious customers thronged the shop only to share their agony.
According to preliminary investigation, Ramsingh may have taken with him gold valuables worth Rs five crore pledged with him, besides cash amounting to several lakhs, he had received towards the order. He is also learnt to have borrowed heavily from several people. The aggrieved people were seen forcing others especially those from Rajasthan to down the shutters and search for the man in question. Ramsingh hails from Ramasanni village, Sojat taluk in the desert state.
The town police have registered a case and are investigating.
