"Basavanna did not use 'Lingayat' term in his Vachanas, and how can he establish Lingayat religion," asked Dr Chandrashekhar Shivacharya Swamiji of Kashi Peetha.

Speaking at the Siddhaveera Swamiji statue installation ceremony at Hanneradumutt in Old Hubballi on Thursday, he noted that Veerashaiva and Lingayat are same.

Those who wear Ishtalingaa are called as Veerashaivas. In government documents, Veerashaiva-Lingayat term is used. The tradition of having no difference betwen Veerashaiva and Lingayat should continue, the seer noted.

People should know the importance of traditions. Jangamas should give religious education to their children, for which a Gurukula has been started near Bankapur. Kashi Mutt has facilities to accommodate 3,000 devotees at a time. Devotees can visit the mutt using Hubballi-Varanasi direct train service, he added.

Litterateur G H Hanneradumath, chartered accountant N A Charantimath, and others were present.
