<p>Thiruvananthapuram: Funeral of Kerala former Chief Minister and CPM leader V S Achuthanandan turned out to be a historic event with the huge participation of people.</p><p>The funeral was conducted at the Valiya Chudukadu burial ground at Achuthanandan's home town Alappuzha at around 9.15 pm on Wednesday.</p><p>The funeral that was scheduled to be held by Wednesday afternoon got delayed by hours owing to the flow of people paying last respects to the mass leader.</p><p>The 150 kilometer funeral procession that started from state capital Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday afternoon to his home town Alappuzha took around 24 hours. Thousands of people waited along the stretch even during the odd hours to pay last respects to VS, as he is popularly known.</p><p>It was a sea of people at his home town Alappuzha on Wednesday. People from all over the state converged at Alappuzha to bid farewell. It was not just CPM workers, but ordinary people, including women and youngsters, among those who waited for hours, even braving the rains, to have the last glimpse of the mass leader.</p><p>Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, ministers and senior politicians were present at the funeral. Achuthanandan's son Arun Kumar lit the pyre at Valiya Chudukad, which is the memorial of those martyred in the Punnapra - Vayalar uprising of 1946 against the erstwhile Travancore princely state. </p>
