Dharmendra Pradhan asks NCERT to introduce road safety course in schools

New Delhi: To sensitise students about the traffic rules, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday asked NCERT to include audio-visual modules on road safety for age- and class-appropriate courses for Class 1 to 12 students.

The minister also said modules should be introduced this academic year (2025-26) as an elective subject. Pradhan also suggested incorporating courses on energy conservation awareness in schools.

Speaking at a road safety event, Road Transport Minister Gadkari said the government has introduced several new rules, like mandatory wearing of rear seat belts, and these habits should be taught early in childhood. "I would request students to advise their parents against using mobile phones while driving and encourage responsible behaviour 
on roads," he said.

Gadkari suggested that school infrastructure, like entry and exit points, must also be made safer, with lifts for children and elderly people. 

The Union minister said the government has decided to give an award of Rs 25,000 to those who help accident victims.
 
"We have decided that any third person who helps an accident victim will be given an award of Rs 25,000. Also, if any accident victim is admitted to any hospital, we will provide financial support of up to Rs 1.5 lakh for a maximum of 7 days from the date of the accident," he said.
