<p>Contrary to the stand of the Jammu and Kashmir government, Union Home Sushil Kumar Shinde on Sunday said that situation in the state is not conducive for total or partial revocation of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).<br /><br /></p>.<p>“There is marked improvement in the security situation in the state. With further improvement in the situation, AFSPA can be revoked partially or in a phased manner. <br /><br />However, it would not be wise to take any chances at the moment,” Shinde told reporters on the sidelines of a function organised at Congress headquarters here.<br /><br />However, he said the process of reduction of footprints of paramilitary forces from the state will continue with improvement in the overall situation.<br /><br />He said the Centre will provide all possible assistance to the state for fighting militancy and return of peace.<br /><br />Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has been repeatedly saying for the last one year that the day is not far when the controversial Act will be withdrawn from the state.<br /><br />The state government had constituted two committees for identifying areas from where the AFSPA could be withdrawn. <br /><br />The committee comprised the state’s chief secretary, state police chief and corps commanders of Srinagar and Jammu-based Army establishments.<br /><br />Not many meetings have taken place due to reluctance from the Army to partially withdraw the AFSPA. Shinde said people of the state, particularly Kashmir, deserve the credit for the peace and improvement in the situation. “Peace has come to Kashmir and I want to thank people, particularly from the Valley, that your determination has made it possible. <br /><br />I felicitate you and the credit must go to you,” he said. “During my stay, I met many people who saw their dear ones killed in front of them and yet continue to work for the nation,” he added.<br /></p>
