Tamil Nadu Rains Highlights: Heavy rains send vegetable prices soaring in Chennai

A farmer's body on Wednesday said standing paddy crops in at least 'five lakh acres' have been 'damaged' due to monsoon rains and demanded Rs 50,000 farm input compensation per hectare, while the Tamil Nadu government said it has directed authorities in Cauvery delta regions to assess the damage.

Paddy crops, both Samba and Thaladi in at least five lakh acres in Cauvery delta regions, including Nagapattinam and Thanjavur, has been damaged, President of the TN Federation of All Farmers Associations, P R Pandian said.

. Schools and colleges in Chennai and adjoining districts that were functioning normally since October have now commenced switching over to online classes again after the state government declared holidays following heavy rain.

The government has declared holidays in Chennai and adjoining districts and the principals and teachers do not want the children to face a gap in their studies again due to the festival holidays and now due to rains.

Sudhakumari, Principal of a private school at Anna Nagar (West) in Chennai, told IANS, "The government has declared holidays for schools due to rains and we don't want the students to lose classes continuously. Classes were not held during the Diwali festival and now the government has declared holidays due to rains and this would lead to students losing the continuity in studies. So, we have opted for online classes again."

. Heavy rains and waterlogging across Chennai have sent vegetable prices soaring in the wholesale Koyambedu market, while prices in the retail vegetable markets too have catapulted.

Tomatoes were priced at Rs 100 per kg, lady's finger touched the Rs 150 per kg mark, while beans were being sold for Rs 100 per kg in Chennai's retail markets after heavy rains led to soaring prices of vegetables in the wholesale Koyambedu market.

Almost all the vegetables that were selling at less than Rs 25 per kg are selling for more than Rs 50 per kg now. Carrot is selling at Rs 130 per kg, while capsicum is priced at Rs 120 per kg.

. Following a let-up, showers resumed here and nearby regions while the low pressure area turned well marked on Wednesday, the Meteorological Department said.

It is likely to become a depression and cross north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coast on November 11 evening, the department said.

The weather system is likely to bring widespread rainfall in Tamil Nadu for the next three to four days. The rainfall is expected to be scattered, heavy, very heavy and extremely heavy in specific regions and light to moderate in most other places.

On November 11, "thunderstorm with scattered heavy to very heavy rain with isolated extremely heavy rain is likely to occur over Tiruvallur, Kallakurichi, Salem, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet and Tirupattur districts of Tamil Nadu" the department said. Heavy rain is also likely in the Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Chengalpattu, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Chennai and Puducherry. From November 12 to 14, rainfall is likely in several regions of Tamil Nadu.

. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has asked the people of Chennai to provide details of roads in their neighbourhood that are inundated after the city was lashed with heavy rains over the weekend.

The Civil engineering department of IIT, Madras will get support from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to advise Chennai corporation on its future construction plans.

Balaji Narasimhan, Professor of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras in a statement said that the data provided by the people on flooding would help the Chennai corporation improve the design of roads, stormwater drains, and improve their maintenance.

The Civil Engineering professor said that the department is working in association with Chennai corporation and the disaster mitigation agency to put together a real-time system in place.
