The 1977 elections resulted in the first non-Congress government in India.
This had happened right after Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency.
The Election Commission has noted that the unique feature of the campaign was the predominance of issues of national importance as compared to earlier elections when narrow considerations of caste, community and religion were played up.
This was a happy development, it had said.
