Actor-turned-politician Sunny Deol’s real name has left the BJP in a tizzy. According to the nomination papers filed before the election officer, Sunny Deol’s real name is Ajay Singh Dharminder Deol.

His real name will appear on the electronic voting machines (EVM) in the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha constituency as the BJP's nominee. He is contesting against state Congress president Sunil Jakhar.

The BJP is worried that electors in the constituency may not know who 'Ajay Singh' is and might get confused on the day of polling.

The BJP has swung into action and has sought the change of name on the EVM from Ajay Singh to Sunny Deol.

Under the rule, only the name appearing in the nomination paper is put up on the EVM’s. However, there are certain provisions which allow a different name to be used. The saffron party is hopeful that the confusion over its candidate’s name will soon end.

Sunny Deol started his campaign in Gurdaspur on Thursday. He sat on top of a truck and moved around the area, drawing a huge cheer from the people. Deol also lifted a hand-pump while canvassing for votes, in a throwback to the famous scene from the movie “Gaddar” in which he starred.
