Lorry overturns on Charmadi Ghat road

Traffic on Charmadi Ghat came to a standstill for about three hours after a truck overturned by the road on Wednesday morning.

The truck was transporting fruits from Hassan to Mangaluru and overturned near Sasyodyana in Belthangady taluk.

Eyewitnesses told the police that the driver had lost control over the vehicle. The wooden boxes with bananas and other fruits were spilt on the road.

Due to the blockade, vehicles were lined up on both sides of the road.

Police staff members had to use an earthmover to shift the lorry to facilitate the movement of vehicles at 7 am.

Although the truck was shifted, vehicles could not move normally as boxes with fruits from the truck had to be loaded back into the craters and the work continued till afternoon.

The vehicles were stranded up to a distance of five kilometres.

Buses bound to Dharmasthala and Mangaluru were forced to stop at Kottigehara until the road was cleared. Some buses returned to Kottigehara without going to Mangaluru.

Passengers were, therefore, put through a lot of inconvenience, police sources told DH.
