Committee monitors TV programmes

The Media Certification and Monitoring Committee has been checking the content on the local electronic media for violation of the model code of conduct.

The district-level media certification and monitoring committee (MCMC) will function round-the-clock scrutinising programmes aired by the local TV channels and other electronic media.

In adherence to the directions of the Election Commission of India, the committee will check for cases of violation of the model code of conduct in connection with the parliamentary elections.

“The Media Monitoring Cell, situated on the ground floor of the Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner’s office in Mangaluru, has been closely watching and listening to programmes on all electronic media in the region, since March 12,” said Rohini K, District Information and Publicity Department senior assistant director and MCMC member-secretary.

“All programmes are recorded. Cases of violation of the model code of conduct in the programmes will be reported to the concerned authorities for further action. The critical observation will continue till voting,” Rohini added.

Mandatory

Speaking to DH, the officer said that it is mandatory for all electronic media to obtain pre-certification for the political advertisements that are broadcast on their respective media.

“The respective media houses will be made liable for the violation of the model code of conduct if the advertisements are not duly certified by the media certification and monitoring committee. Also, the certification should be strictly displayed in the advertisements. The authority concerned will note the expenditure made on the election-related advertisements in print media as well,” she explained.

The officer added that the deputy commissioner, who is also the district returning officer, will be constantly briefed on the developments.
