Two persons were killed and five others seriously injured in firing by police and BSF personnel to quell a group of people protesting delay in counting of panchayat votes at a counting centre in lower Assam's Dhubri district today.
Protesting the "delay" in counting at Hatsingimari subdivision under Mancachar assembly constituency, supporters of the contestants attacked security personnel and pelted stones at them and counting personnel leading to a chaotic situation, official sources sources said.
The security forces opened fire to quell the mob, they said. Two persons died on the spot and five others were critically wounded and were admitted to hospital, they added.
