AAP MLA arrested for abetting woman worker's suicide

After four days of grilling, Sharad Chauhan, the AAP legislator from Narela, was arrested in connection with the suicide of a woman volunteer whose pleas for help against sexual harassment by a “party worker” went unheard.

The lawmaker, arrested for abetment of suicide along with seven other accused, was on Sunday sent to a day’s judicial custody by a court in Rohini. The court rejected the plea to send the accused to police custody.

Chauhan’s arrest late on Saturday gave the rival BJP a handle to dub the ruling party as an anti-women organisation. With Chauhan’s  arrest, the shamelist of arrested AAP legislators has touched 12.

Apart from Chauhan, no other legislator is in jail at present.

The woman AAP worker, for whose suicide Chauhan has landed behind bars, died after consuming poison in Narela and died on July 19. She had earlier blamed the legislator for protecting her molester.

Yadav said:“The victim, who owned a beauty parlour, was threatened and hounded by masked bikers sent by the accused, issued threat letters and gave life threat on phones.”
