Former skipper of the Indian cricket team and Congress MP Mohammed Azharuddin is all set to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections from a constituency in Murshidabad district of West Bengal. Although the constituency is yet to be fixed, his candidature has almost been finalised.

Although state party leaders seemed yet unaware of the development, Congress observer in charge of West Bengal Shakeel Ahmed and MoS Rail Adhir Chowdhury both admitted the same before reporters in New Delhi.

Azharuddin also acknowledged the same while talking to a news agency. “Yes, there is a bright possibility that I will be contesting this year’s Lok Sabha elections from a seat in West Bengal,” he said.

He, however, did not specify any preferred constituency and said that the decision would be taken by Ahmed Chowdhury.

According to sources, the decision was taken because of Azharuddin’s proximity to the junior Railway minister, who is a heavyweight from the district in Bengal, one of the few strongholds of Congress in the state.
