Accusing the Congress of making false promises of eradicating poverty since the time of Jawaharlal Nehru, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday that the day India will be free from the Congress it will also be free from poverty. Singh was addressing a BJP rally at Amta in West Bengal’s Howrah district.

"Earlier in the days of Jawaharlal Nehru, Congress used to say that they will eradicate poverty from India. Now Rahul Gandhi is making the same claim. The fact is that India can only be free of poverty if it is free from Congress," said Singh.

Singh also targeted TMC over its alleged strong arm tactics in the state and efforts to muzzle the opposition. Accusing the TMC of continuing the "tradition" of political violence, Singh said that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerje came to power with the slogan of "Maa, Maati, Manush (mother, soil and the people," but now none are safe in Bengal.

"Mamata Banerjee raised the slogan of Maa, Maati, Manush. But now under TMC rule neither mother nor people are safe," said Singh.

He said the Left Front cadres who orchestrated violence during the Left rule in the state of had now joined the TMC.

"The way TMC has unleashed violence on the opposition makes it evident that there is no democracy in Bengal. We will not rest till we restore democracy,” said Singh.

He accused the TMC government of obstructing people of Bengal from receiving the benefits of the Centre’s welfare schemes.
