The Supreme Court has asked the Centre and all the states to consider prohibiting the use, sale and disposal of plastic in all municipal corporations, saying the situation has already become “alarming”.
A bench of Justices V Gopala Gowda and Adarsh Kumar Goel asked the governments to put an end to the open garbage disposal system and decide on the plea made by NGO Karuna Society for Animals and Nature and others for banning the use of plastic as per the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
Disposing of the PIL, the court agreed with the petitioners that residents used plastic, which was later consumed by animals, adversely affecting their digestive tracts. This resulted in their death and subsequent pollution of the area and unhygienic conditions.
