CPI inflation rises 11.89 pc in July

The double-digit rise in prices of consumer goods comes at a time when the Wholesale Price Index (WPI) based inflation rate has continued to remain in the negative territory for 11 weeks in a row ending August 15.
According to data released by government today, the CPI (Industrial Workers) rose by 11.89 per cent in July compared to 9.29 per cent a month ago.
The CPI is used for calculating Dearness Allowance for Industrial workers.
Among the centres, the Nagpur recorded highest increase, mainly on account of rise in prices of tur dal, vegetables and fruit items, petrol and primary school books.
Second highest rise in inflation was recorded at Bhopal centre followed by Kodarma and Lucknow.
Prices of essential commodities like wheat, masur dal, dairy milk, onion, house rates and rents and rice also witnessed sharp increase at other centres.
Although the WPI-based index also showed increase in prices of food articles including sugar, milk, fruits and vegetables, the inflation for the week ended August 15 worked out to be (-) 0.95 per cent.
