Kerala government will institute an enquiry by a police officer of the rank of inspector-general into the alleged snooping of emails of top personalities from Muslim community by Kerala police, chief minister Oommen Chandy said.

Addressing the media on Wednesday, Chandy said IG Gowri Sanjay Kumar is expected to complete investigations and submit a report to the government in five days. On Tuesday, the government suspended sub-inspector S Biju in connection with the case.

A Malayalam daily reported recently that the special branch of state police was spying on e-mails of around 260 prominent persons from Muslim community. The government denied any deliberate effort from police to spy on persons from the community and that the police only tried to verify the email addresses under specific circumstances.
