Fuel price hike rocks Parliament again, both Houses adjourned for the day

During the Question Hour, Opposition members, mainly from the Congress, entered the Well and started raising slogans

Fuel price hike continued to rock Parliament for the second day on Tuesday with Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha failing to conduct much business after the Opposition protested against not allowing an immediate discussion on the issue by suspending business of the House.

Opposition MPs in both the Houses demanded immediate discussion on fuel price hike but the Chair did not allow it, leading to repeated adjournments.

In Rajya Sabha, notices to suspend the business under Rule 267 were submitted by Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge, BSP floor leader Satish Chandra Mishra, DMK floor leader Tiruchi Siva and Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi in Rajya Sabha.

However, Deputy Chairman Harivansh disallowed the notices saying Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu had already rejected a similar notice on Monday. He also said such notices cannot be taken up without the Chairman's consent, as Siva pointed out that it was a fresh notice.

The House witnessed two adjournments in the morning session while the final one came soon after it re-assembled in the afternoon session.

Unhappy with the Deputy Chairman's announcement during the Zero Hour, the Opposition MPs raised slogans and demanded that the issue be discussed immediately.

"The Leader of Opposition has already been given an opportunity (on Monday) to raise the matter," Harivansh said during protest in the morning session.

As the Deputy Chairman went ahead with the Zero Hour, the Opposition MPs continued their sloganeering prompting Harivansh first to adjourn the House till 12 noon.

When the House re-assembled, Kharge was once again on his feet demanding an immediate discussion and said the notices submitted were fresh. "We accepted the Chairman's decision yesterday. Today, we have submitted fresh notice and other MPs have also given notices and included kerosene and LPG price hike," he said.

However, Harivansh repeated that the issue was decided by the Chairman and went ahead with the Question Hour amid sloganeering. However, 15 minutes into the Question Hour, he adjourned the House as protesting MPs refused to budge. Similar scenes were witnessed in the afternoon sitting, which started at 2 pm, and the House was then adjourned for the day.

Similar scenes were witnessed in Lok Sabha where MPs trooped to the Well of the House and shouted slogans against the government.
