Last Updated 25 July 2019, 10:55 IST

Following a mob attack on a police station in which a Sub-Inspector and a constable were seriously injured, Gopal Rao, the range IG of Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh, on Thursday visited the police station and assured action on the culprits.

On Wednesday night, relatives of a youth from a local Dalit colony, alleging that Sub-inspector B Lakshman Rao had tortured him in the name of the investigation, broke the locked gates of Raipur police station.

They then started arguing with the police which soon turned into a free-for-all brawl. The SI sensing trouble tried to save himself from the attackers, but he was dragged out and beaten mercilessly. Women also took turns and beat up the police.

According to sources, police picked up Pichayya who was in an inebriated condition and two ladies Kanakamma and Laxmamma of the local SC colony for questioning in connection with a debt they took from one Joseph. They alleged that the police used third-degree treatment during interrogation.

Pichayya allegedly suffered internal injuries. He was then sent to a hospital. Learning about the torture, his relatives and fellow villagers stormed the station and attacked the two policemen after ransacking the furniture.

DSP Rambabu, who rushed to the station, said the injured police officers were rushed to the hospital for treatment and they were stable.

Meanwhile, the AP police have strengthened protection for the police station with additional forces and have said that some of the attackers have been identified with the help of the footage available on the social media.
