Kerala Chief Minister and CPM politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the Left-front will try to defeat Congress chief Rahul Gandhi at Wayanad, even as he has no doubts of Rahul’s victory in Amethi.

Mr. Vijayan however said that Rahul Gandhi contesting in Kerala would give a wrong signal that the Congress was not actually fighting the BJP, by the Left-front also. If Rahul’s candidature at Wayanad is a symbolic fight in South India, he could have opted any constituency in the South where he could give a good fight to the BJP. The BJP is very insignificant in Wayanad, he said at a meet-the-press at the Thiruvananthapuram Press Club on Sunday.

When asked whether Rahul was fearing of defeat in Amethi, the senior CPM leader said that in the present context, the BJP would not win any constituency in UP. “I don’t think BJP can defeat Rahul at Amethi,” he said.

Mr. Vijayan said that the hope of Congress that Rahul’s candidature in Wayanad would have a positive impact on the Congress-led UDF’s candidates in other constituencies in Kerala was baseless. The Left-front has not taken any decision yet to change its present candidate in Wayanad – CPI’s former Malappuram district secretary P P Suneer.

The Left-front leader also said that the BJP would not make any gains from the Sabarimala issue in Kerala, but would suffer setback only.
