The first winner of elections that used EVMs ultimately did not win!
EVMs were first introduced in 50 out of 84 polling stations in Parur Assembly seat in Kerala during the 1982 polls.
There was no law for introducing the EVMs then and the EC invoked its powers to implement it.
One of the defeated candidates first approached High Court, which binned his arguments against the EVMs.
However, SC in May 1984 set aside the election saying that there was no legal sanction for the use of EVMs.
