National Security Advisor Ajit Doval tasked with quelling communal riots in Delhi

Last Updated 01 March 2020, 08:01 IST

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval has been tasked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to contain violence and bring normalcy in north-east Delhi, which has witnessed communal clashes since Sunday.

Doval got into the act soon after United States President Donald Trump flew out of India after his two-day visit on Tuesday, by touring the violence-hit areas twice in 24 hours.

Accompanied by Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik, newly appointed Special Commissioner S N Srivastava and other senior officers, he made his first visit on Tuesday late night. He directed police and paramilitary officials deployed in the area to ensure that no untoward incident happens, besides meeting leaders of different communities to ensure peace. He visited the localities, including Jafrabad, Seelampur and Maujpur among other areas, once again on Wednesday afternoon where he interacted with locals.

A girl in Jaffrabad told him that she does not feel safe and blamed police for “inaction” in containing violence. Doval responded, “I give you my word. Everyone is safe here.”

“A few criminals do things like this, people are trying to isolate them. Police are here and doing its work,” he said adding he was there as per the instructions of Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. He said the situation is under control and people are satisfied.

“Inshallah yahan par bilkul aman hoga (If God wills, there will be peace and harmony here),” he said as he asked locals to “let bygone be bygone”.
