Power, water high on AAP's agenda

As the Aam Aadmi Party seems to be at the threshold of forming the next Delhi government, with the exit polls predicting a majority for it in Saturday’s poll, Delhiites can expect quick delivery on some of its key election promises.

If Arvind Kejriwal takes oath as the chief minister for the second time, he would look to carry on from where he left after his 49-day stint in the secretariat on February 14 last year.

Corruption, power, water and development will expectedly figure high on the new chief minister’s agenda.

To push the anti-corruption agenda, the Delhi Jan Lokpal Bill will be passed in the Assembly, information of government services and forms will be put online. Swaraj Bill will be passed and a big push might be made to get Delhi full statehood. 

Since “inflated” power bills have given the party a punching bag since its creation, monthly power bills of consumers will be slashed by half. The private power distribution companies’ accounts will be audited as the exercise has remained inconclusive even after being initiated by Kejriwal in his previous stint as the chief minister.

The city will get its own power station and the AAP govenment may encourage greater competition among private power distribution companies.

The “muffler man”, as Kejriwal is popularly known, also realises the importance of water issues in the lives of Delhiites. Free 20 kilolitre water would be given every month to each household with metered supply – something which he ensured within 48 hours to assuming power after the 2013 Assembly polls .

 There will also be no 10 per cent annual increase in water tariff and strict action will be taken against water mafia, according to the AAP manifesto.
