Rahul takes dig at Modi over Trump's U-turn on Pakistan

Last Updated 15 October 2017, 20:15 IST
Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Sunday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over US President Donald Trump’s perceived softening towards Pakistan.

“Modi ji quick; looks like President Trump needs another hug,” Rahul said on Twitter, tagging a tweet by Trump thanking Pakistan for “cooperation on many fronts”.

During his recent visit to the US, Trump and Modi had struck an instant rapport, which was reflected in the joint statement that had some strong words for Pakistan.

Modi’s bear hugs to Trump were much talked about, with experts questioning the prime minister’s style of “personal diplomacy”.

Rahul’s tweet on Sunday referred to Trump’s tweet thanking Islamabad after Pakistani forces saved an American family from the clutches of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

“Starting to develop a much better relationship with Pakistan and its leaders. I want to thank them for their cooperation on many fronts,” Trump had tweeted.

The US President’s remarks were perceived as a softening of the US’ stand towards Pakistan. Earlier, the US had taken a strong position against Pakistan, accusing it of not doing enough to combat terrorism emanating from its soil.
