Despite rumours that Amit Shah might return to Gujarat to replace Anandiben Patel as chief minister, the BJP president is said to have put off his ambitions till 2019 at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s instructions.

Sources close to the BJP chief said Shah has “moved on in his life” from his Gujarat ambitions to perform the larger role of helping his party capture Uttar Pradesh and oversee the NDA’s re-election in 2019, the time when his presidency would also end.
Shah, the most trusted confidante of Modi, said to have nurtured ambition of replacing his mentor at the state but had to give that up to hitch his political fortune with the Prime Minister.

After his election to lead the NDA government at the Centre, Modi chose Anandiben Patel as Gujarat chief minister.
