Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday that strict action will be taken against the guilty in the Dhule lynching case.

He also warned people not to spread rumours on social media.

“We are going to take strict action (against all the accused),” Fadnavis, who also holds the Home, Law and Judiciary portfolio, told reporters on the eve of the monsoon session of Maharashtra legislature in Nagpur.

“Not only sending a fake message is an offence but forwarding (rumour) messages without verification means that they are also part of the crime,” he said.

On Sunday, five nomadic tribes of the Nath Gosavi community were lynched in Sakri tehsil of Dhule district, after local suspected them to be child-lifters.

After the mob violence, the Dhule police arrested 23 people and have remanded them to police custody till 6 July. Several villagers are still absconding.
