Last Updated 02 November 2018, 03:50 IST

Following the murder of five people at Tinsukia in upper Assam, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asked whether the killings were the outcome of the ongoing National Register of Citizen (NRC) operations in Assam.

“Terrible news coming out of Assam. We strongly condemn the brutal attack in Tinsukia and the killing of Shyamlal Biswas, Ananta Biswas, Abhinash Biswas and Subodh Das. Is this the outcome of recent NRC development,” stated Banerjee in a late night tweet on Thursday. In another tweet, she mentioned the name of a fifth victim of the killings.

“The fifth victim in Tinsukia...Dhananjay Namashudra” tweeted Banerjee.

Expressing her condolences, the Chief Minister demanded swift punishment of those involved in the killings. “We have no words to express our deep sorrow to the grieving families. The perpetrators must be punished at the very earliest,” tweeted Banerjee.

She also said that the Trinamool Congress(TMC) will take out protest marches against the killings in several parts of the state including Kolkata on Friday.

“ In protest against the brutal killings in Assam @AITCofficial (TMC) will organise protest rallies tomorrow (Friday, November 2) in different parts of North and South Bengal including Siliguri and Kolkata,” tweeted the Chief Minister.
