School of Allied Health Sciences (SOAHS) celebrated its 20th Annual Day, along with awards programme, at Golden Jubilee Hall of Syndicate Bank here, recently.

The SOAHS was carved out of Kasturba Medical
College-Manipal as the first full-fledged college of allied health sciences in the country in 1999.

“A constituent school of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, SOAHS has grown by leaps and bounds and offers 77 courses today,” said Dean Dr B Rajashekhar, who is also the founding dean.

He said, “With 15 full-fledged departments offering undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes, along with 55 PhD qualified faculty, it is the most sought after destination for students wishing to pursue their career as health professionals.”

As SOAH celebrates 20 years, Department of Occupational Therapy is celebrating 25 years of its academic programme. The department already existed when it was weaned away from KMC to form a School.

The chief guest for the Annual Day was a luminary Dr Jennifer Creek from Health and Care Professions Council, UK.

Prof William E Harn, Dean, Graduate Studies, Lamar University, USA was the guest of honour and Dr PLNG Rao, Pro Vice Chancellor (Quality Assurance), MAHE, Manipal presided over the function.

This year’s Distinguished Alumnus Award was given to alumnus of Department of Medical Lab Technology, Dr Roshan Lal Shrestha, Scientist, Cancer Genetics Branch, Centre for Cancer Research, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, USA.
