Manchester: Young fast bowler Anshul Kamboj has been added to the Indian squad for the remaining two Tests in England as a cover for the uncapped Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep, and there’s a likelihood of the Haryanvi debuting in the fourth game that kicks off at Old Trafford on July 23.
.
Although there’s no official word from the BCCI, it has been learnt that Kamboj was summoned by the selectors considering Arshdeep and Akash are racing against time to be fit for the Manchester match, which India need to win or draw to keep the series, which England lead 2-1, alive.
.
Left-arm pacer Arshdeep, who is a regular feature in T20Is and was a key member of the triumphant T20 World Cup campaign in the Americas last year, suffered a cut to his bowling hand during a training session in Beckenham on Thursday. The 26-year-old was trying to stop the ball on his follow-through from Sai Sudharsan when the incident occurred. Medical personnel immediately attended to him, and it was informed later that he received stitches.
.
The BCCI is also yet to notify on the nature of Akash’s injury officially. However, it has been reliably learnt that the 28-year-old, who was a star in the win at Birmingham with a haul of 4/88 and 6/99, has been hit by a groin injury. He struggled for rhythm in the third Test at Lord’s, and apparently, things are not looking bright for the Bihar-born pacer.
.How India are losing the plot .
If Akash is ruled out of the fourth Test and India choose to rest either of Jasprit Bumrah or Mohammed Siraj as part of workload management, then Kamboj could line up along with Prasidh Krishna. Karnataka’s Prasidh was dropped for the third Test because of Akash’s stellar performance in the second and Bumrah returning for Lord’s game after being rested at Birmingham.
.
The 24-year-old Kamboj made quite an impression during India A’s tour prior to the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. A skiddy operator who can hit the deck when required, Kamboj bagged 1/69 in the opening four-day game at Canterbury before scalping 2/56 and 2/6 in the second match at Northampton. He even scored an unbeaten 51, showing he’s no mug with the bat.
.
In 24 first-class games, Kamboj has taken 79 wickets but what shot him into the limelight was taking all 10 wickets in an innings (10/49) against Kerala last year in a Ranji Trophy match at Lahli. After Bengal’s Premangsu Chatterjee (1956-57) and Rajasthan’s Pradeep Somasundaram (1985-86), Kamboj is only the third bowler to achieve that feat in the Ranji Trophy. Overall, Kamboj is the sixth Indian to achieve this feat in first-class cricket after Anil Kumble, Subhash Gupte and Debasis Mohanty.
.
Meanwhile, the Indians held a closed-door training session at Old Trafford on Sunday. They were greeted by wet weather but what they did and how many turned up couldn’t be ascertained as the media wasn’t allowed owing to ‘security reasons’.
