Goa move changed Corominas’ fortunes

Ferran Corominas has set the stage alight since moving to FC Goa in 2017. Having operated as a winger for a major chunk of his career, the Spaniard finally got to play in his favoured position -- striker -- after landing in India.

His 18 strikes earned him the golden boot on his debut season (2017-18) in the Indian Super League (ISL). The Spaniard has been equally productive in the ongoing edition as his brilliant form in front of goal has ensured Goa’s surge to the top of the table.

“I consider myself a striker,” said Corominas, whose 14 goals this term so far has put him in the pole position to retain the title.

“When I was first called up for the national team, we were playing with a 4-3-3 formation, So the coach used to play me on the wing. When I made it to the first team of Espanyol, because of the players that were there upfront, again the coach used me as a winger. It wasn’t good for me because I am a striker. I enjoy playing as a number 9 more than playing at the sides.”

Corominas had quite a career in La Liga before his move to Goa. In 2005-06, the 36-year-old netted the all-important goal against Real Sociedad that saved RCD Espanyol from relegation. He also scored one apiece in both the legs against Werder Bremen in the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) semifinal in 2006-07. The forward, however, missed out on the final against Sevilla, who won on penalties.

“Its one of many. I had scored in the UEFA Cup semifinal (now Europa League). I also scored the goal that kept Espanyol in the first division. I got promoted with Elche to the first division. These are good memories but I have many like that,” he recalled.
