How messy Argentina could still reach last 16

Last Updated 22 June 2018, 11:51 IST

Though Argentina faced a humiliating defeat in their FIFA World Cup group D match against Croatia on Thursday, there is still hope for the Latin American team to qualify for the last 16.

While Croatia with six points have already made it into the top 16, Argentina's hopes now rest on how Iceland and Nigeria perform in their remaining games. Currently, Iceland and Argentina both have a single point each after drawing their opening game.

Could they pull it off?

After underperforming in the first two games, Messi and co, have a mountain to climb if they are to qualify. But, if results go as mentioned below, there is a chance for La Albiceleste to qualify.

*The game between Nigeria and Iceland should either end in a draw or a victory for Nigeria. If either of the two results happen, the points table will read

Argentina: 1 Point
Iceland: 2 Points
Nigeria: 1 Point (or 3 points if they win)

A win for Iceland will put them on four points and they will just need a draw against Croatia to qualify.

* If Iceland win vs Nigeria, Croatia should beat Iceland. Argentina then will have to beat Nigeria by a huge margin to stand a chance to go through.

With their task cut out, fans will be hoping that the team can somehow manage to enter the top 16. Youthful Nigeria also known as the Super Eagles will be hoping to punch above their weight and cause a huge upset by knocking out Argentina.
